JOB SUMMARY

The Systems Administrator supervises the deployment, configuration and maintenance of all Information Technology (IT) related systems including servers and the network infrastructure; ensures that all systems are continuously updated and tuned for peak performance; develops and updates documentation on all systems; directs planning and deployment when required and performs administrative duties.

Ultimately the Systems Administrator through effective supervision ensures the efficient functioning of all IT related systems. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Deploys server and networking hardware and software systems.
  • Installs, configures and maintains server hardware and associated infrastructure.
  • Installs, configures, and maintains server operating systems and associated software applications.
  • Installs, configures and maintains network switches, routers and other associated infrastructure.
  • Installs configures and maintains firewalls and associated hardware.
  • Plans and implements protocols to ensure network security and reliability.
  • Builds and configures firewall rules to prevent unauthorized access to the network.
  • Configures and implements access lists and security protocols for access to systems and services.
  • Trains users in the secure use of software and hardware services.
  • Implements backup and disaster recovery protocols to ensure file system integrity and business continuity.
  • Audits the performance of network, server and software systems and associated peripherals using system logs and monitoring tools and makes recommended adjustments.
  • Investigates, recommends and installs enhancements and operating procedures that optimize network availability.
  • Documents network problems and resolutions for further reference.
  • Maintains software and hardware licenses.
  • Develops documentation, training programs and reports.
  • Develops and maintains documentation and reports on all server and network systems including associated software and hardware infrastructure.
  • Develops and maintains documentation on all proprietary systems attached to the network.
  • Develops and conducts training programs for employees in the use of various proprietary systems as needed.
  • Prepares department reports encompassing, achievements, challenges and recommendations when directed.
  • Prepares a monthly summary of department activities to be provided to the IT Manager no later than three (3) working days after the end of the month.
  • Supervises staff activities and monitors department expenditure.
  • Participates in the decision-making process to employ, transfer, layoff, recall, promote, dismiss, reward, discipline, deal with grievances or effectively recommend such action.
  • Plans, directs and supervises staff activities within the department.
  • Assists with the preparation of budgets and requests and assures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials and time.
  • Assists with the development of short and long-range plans.
  • Gathers, interprets and prepares data for studies, reports and recommendations.

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION 

Minimum Acceptable Academic/Technical/Professional Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in an IT related field
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA), Red Hat Certified System
  • Administrator (RHCSA), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certifications
  • Supervisory training

Minimum Number of Years of Relevant Experience

  • Five (5) years’ experience in an IT department with progressive senior level responsibility.
